13 Feb Mums the Word!
By: Laura Nell Burton
On February 8, 2017, Mums & Mimosas raised $125,000 at the Witte Museum’s Mays Family Center for San Antonio’s Good Samaritan Community Services (GSCS), a $25,000 increase over the previous year. It was a great honor to serve as decorations chairman with my cute friend Whitney Ormond. Together we designed and created 66 artful centerpieces featuring white azaleas generously supplied by our friend Wally Baker at Casa Verde Landscaping.
Over 500 mums lunched in gold chiavari chairs at round tables dressed in beautiful pink and champagne linens that we selected working with the capable team at Illusions.
We distinguished our 15 wonderful sponsors by seating them at rectangular tables dressed in specialty linens lined up front, center and perpendicular to the stage.
Creative Noggin designed all marketing materials, while Neiman Marcus donated table favors and the coveted raffle item, (Jimmy) Choos Your Shoes!
Established in 2009, Mums & Mimosas has raised more than $475,000 to benefit the Child and Family Development Programs at GSCS. Each year, mothers of all ages gather together in celebration of motherhood and friendship as we welcome nationally-recognized speakers and authors to remind us how special it is to be a mother, and help mothers in need on San Antonio’s West Side.

We were ecstatic to welcome author and media contributor Lee Woodruff! In her best-selling novel, Perfectly Imperfect, Lee talks about the journey motherhood takes you on, the tragedies and triumphs, and the impact it makes on a woman’s life. You know Lee from the immediate success of her first book, In an Instant, co-authored with her husband and ABC anchor, Bob Woodruff. She is remarkable, with a down-to-earth, straight-from-the-gut style. She captivated us with her distinctive perspective that comes straight from her heart.
Lee and her husband founded the Bob Woodruff Foundation to assist injured service members and their families heal from the wounds of war. To date, the non-profit foundation has raised more than $40 million and invested in grassroots organizations and programs around the country that are helping veterans reintegrate into their communities.
GSCS is a catalyst for change, supporting individuals and families by providing excellent community services to overcome the impact of poverty. These services include a child development program, afterschool and summer youth enrichment programs, a college readiness program, family services, and the only nationally accredited senior center in South Texas. What began as a ministry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on the West Side of San Antonio in 1951 now reaches 5,500 individuals and families across eight sites in seven South Texas cities.
Other past speakers of Mums & Mimosas include: author and comedian Stefanie Wilder-Taylor; authors Amy Nobile & Trisha Ashworth; former editor-in-chief of Real Simple magazine Kristin Van Ogtroi; author Lorilee Craker; author Rosalind Wiseman; and author and advocate Kelly Corrigan.
